When I was in eighth grade, students were encouraged to submit essays to be read during the eighth grade graduation ceremony. Mine was one of the three winning entries. Reading my essay in front of my friends, family, and the entire audience was a little scary; but it was a thrill to share my writing with others.
Many years later, when I was an adult and married, my younger sister Janis stopped by my house to visit. She was excited because she'd written a story that had been published in TRUE ROMANCE magazine. Now I don't know how you feel about your siblings, but anything my little sister can do, I can do better!
Around that same time, my husband and I had purchased some mining property in Nevada. So I wrote a magazine article with the exciting title of "Automobile Use in the Early Mining Days," and sent it off to GOLD PROSPECTOR magazine. The editor accepted it. When I opened that magazine and saw my article listed in the table of contents with my name beside it, I was hooked on writing!
Since then I've written dozens of stories and articles for children's and adults' magazines. Today I spend my time teaching, writing, or riding my mule.
